Victor HUGO. L.A.S. "Victor Hugo" (corrected... - Lot 41 - Nouvelle Etude
Victor HUGO. L.A.S. "Victor Hugo" (corrected minute), Hauteville house June 9, 1862, to Mme Cécile HALPERT; 1 page in-8 on blue paper.

On the character of Mgr Myriel in Les Misérables. He answers his correspondent's question. "Nothing is founded of all that has been said or written about Bishop Myriel. I knew, very vaguely, that at the beginning of this century there had been a good bishop in Digne. Nothing more. I thought I was sufficiently authorized by this fact to place Mr. Myriel there. However, I have not spelled out the name of the town, thereby indicating to the intelligent reader the fiction. Bishop Myriel is a purely imaginary character, and the Catholic newspapers were right to find him implausible. One could even add: impossible, if Charles Borromée, François de Sales, Belzunce and Lascasas had not existed"...Attached is a L.A.S. from Cécile HALPERT, Warsaw, June 4, 1862 (4 p. in-8), saying that she reads Les Misérables with interest, and asking if Monseigneur Bienvenu is "a portrait made from life"... (Hugo wrote an R at the head of the letter).
