BERMONT, P.-L. Plan de la ville de Brest... - Lot 236 - Nouvelle Etude
BERMONT, P.-L. Plan de la ville de Brest / Carte de la Rade et du port de Brest. Paris, Lattré, 1779. Col. of the time. On strong paper. Traces of folds. Yellowed paper. 372 x 655 mm. 1. Map of the city of Brest. Cartouche in the lower right corner. Scale at bottom left of 300 toises (8.1 cm). A wind rose. In 1779, Brest was a well-protected city: the first villages, outside the walls, were only beginning to appear: Jument Blanche, Kervallon, Keranberon, Ville Neuve, Kerorion, La Grivaudière. The references on the plan show us: a) four gates: Landerneau gate to enter the castle, Conquet gate and Recouvrance gate to the west, Brest gate to the east, and the west, the gate of Brest to the north-east; b) two parishes: Saint-Louis and Saint-Sauveur; c) importance of the importance of the suburb of Recouvrance. This plan is very interesting to observe because it shows us that, apart from the old Recouvrance, the urban organisation is reminiscent of a new town whose streets have been well organised. 2. Map of the harbour of Brest. It is a natural harbour and is situated in the northern part of the harbour; coming from the ocean, it is reached by the channel, which is itself rather difficult to cross. It is a natural harbour and is situated to the north of the harbour; coming from the ocean, it is reached by the harbour channel, which is itself rather difficult for large ships to cross because of the rocks in the middle of it. Rhumb line. Scale of 2 nautical leagues from 20 to the degree (7.3 cm). Many depths very useful for navigation. Seventeen mills are shown and several named. several named. The Menez Hom is named Mount Meneham. Importance of the wood Duga. North of Brest, outside the city, on the left bank of the Penfeld, the Saint-Sébastien rope factory. Coveted at all times, among others by the English in 1694, Brest and its harbour are well protected. The Mingan fort and the Porzic battery to the north, as well as the Quelernen entrenchment to the south and the the Quelernen entrenchment, as well as a protection on the Ile Longue, without forgetting, of course the entrance to the port located on the Penfeld, with the horseshoe batteries on the castle side and the Royal battery on the Recouvrance side. § Copy reproduced in Anciennes Cartes Marines de la Bretagne 1580-1800, Pl.
