SCHEDEL (Hartmann). Liber Chronicarum. Registrum huius operis libri cronicarum cum figuris et ymagibus ab initio mu(n)di. Nuremberg, Anton Koberger for Sebald Schreyer and Sebastian Kammermaister, July 12, 1493, fol. of 20 ff. (title and table), 299 ff. numbered f. I to CCXCIX of which 3 bl. - 1 f. n. ch. (the map of Europe) - 6 f. non chiffr. of which the last one is bl., and the five others contain De Sarmacia Regione, colophon on verso of f.300, vellum soiled on wood, smooth spine, fawn title. ORIGINAL LATIN EDITION OF THIS most profusely illustrated INCUNABLE, a masterpiece in the history of printing. The illustration includes more than 1800 superb woodcut figures by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, printed from 645 different woodcuts, including numerous biblical scenes, portraits of saints, emperors, kings, princes, etc. Numerous representations of cities, including 29 on double-page spreads, a double armorial plate (f.CLXXXIII-F.CLXXXIIII), a map of the world (F.XIII) and a double-page in-fine map of Europe. Anton Koberger was responsible for the printing and publication of these chronicles. Wolgemuth was the master of Dürer who was himself his apprentice from 1486 to 1589. Compiled by the Nuremberg humanist, physician and scholar Hartmann Schedel (1460-1508). Some central spotting and foxing. Pages CCLIX-CCLX and CCLXI remain blank, although the pagination numbers are printed on them, these blank pages were intended for annotations. Small hole in the engraving on f. LXXIIII. Qq. brown spots on the world map, heavy central spotting on the map of Europe. Leaves reinforced on the last 5 with spotting. Brunet 1, 1860.
