Originally, this day coincided with Tango no Sekku (Boys' Festival), one of the five annual ceremonies (Gosekku) traditionally celebrated at the Japanese imperial court. Then, in the early Edo period, as power shifted from the aristocracy to the samurai class, Tango no Sekku gained in popularity among samurai families. This festival became an important day for praying for the healthy and safe growth of the boy born into the family heir, as well as for the family's wealth and prosperity.
