A young Tibetan nomad girl from the Tsatsa region of Eastern Tibet. In 2005, we visited a remote region of Eastern Tibet to assess the progress of a clinic project built in Tsatsa the previous year by Karuna-Shechen. I walked into a dimly lit kitchen. Standing near the hearth was a little girl with a pure face, tangled hair, and eyes that were both playful and serious; her smile and direct gaze, completely devoid of shyness, lit up the room. I took a portrait of her before she went back to eating her tsampa (roasted barley flour). This little girl, nicknamed “Karuna girl,” has become the symbol of our humanitarian vision. Since then, her portrait has appeared on our website, in our brochures, and on our posters. Nomadic Tibetan girl from the Tsatsa region, eastern Tibet.
