A Tibetan nomadic woman inside a yak-hair tent. In the center of the tent is the hearth, from which smoke escapes through an opening in the roof. All around are thick, hard, flat cushions covered with woolen rugs. On an altar, a butter lamp casts a golden light on a statue of the Buddha, flanked by photographs of the Dalai Lama and the region’s spiritual masters. During the winter months, they devote much of their time to reciting mantras and prayers and performing thousands of prostrations. It is certainly a harsh winter: temperatures can drop to -30 °C, sometimes even -40 °C. A Tibetan nomadic woman inside a yak-hair tent.
