The name of the pass means “white hair,” because, as the saying goes, even if your hair is black when you begin the climb, it will be white by the time you reach the summit! During his visit to Eastern Tibet in 1988, Khyentse Rinpoche traveled for three days in a palanquin from Derge to Dzongsar Monastery, carried by a dozen people. Along the way, residents of villages and nomadic camps jostled to take turns carrying him every quarter of an hour, as carrying Khyentse Rinpoche was considered a great honor.
