Théodore FRERE (1814-1888) Album of 158 drawings... - Lot 1 - Nouvelle Etude
Théodore FRERE (1814-1888) Album of 158 drawings compiling views of monuments, churches, ruins and medieval sites of Touraine: Tours, Amboise, Chinon, Loches, Langeais, Canches, Marmoutier, Beaulieu-lès-Loches. Also Auvergne, Fontenailles, Château de Luynes, Château de la Motte-Sonzay, some regional views of Provence, Toulon, Hyères, Royat, Mahon (Balearics). Circa 1840. Pencil and white gouache highlights, including two drawings in brown ink. Main dimensions : 7,5 x 11,5 cm ; 13 x 21 cm ; 31,5 x 24,5 cm Théodore Frère, essentially known for his work as an orientalist painter, was a traveler-painter who visited many French regions and Mediterranean countries, as this album testifies. He also travelled in France with the aim of publishing a collection of travels, publications at the time that enjoyed a wide audience. The set was executed for the 1845 edition of the books La Touraine Ancienne et Moderne by Léon Mauduisson and Châteaux et Ruines Historiques de France by Alexandre de Lavergne, both illustrated by lithographs from drawings by Théodore Frère. One will admire in these small vignettes the talent of Théodore Frère (characteristic of the romantic period), to render the poetry of the monuments and ruins of the Gothic period. (Yellowed paper, small lacks and spots on some drawings, oxidation of the gouache) We can send on request a complete photo file
